Many people are looking for ways to stay healthy, active, and look younger. However, this doesn’t always require expensive cosmetic procedures or complex programs.
This is reported in a UNILAD article.
Molecular biologist Nicola Conlon, who specializes in cellular aging, explained that simple daily habits can help extend the healthy part of life.
According to her, a person has not only their chronological age but also their biological age. This indicates how “old” the body is internally and how quickly cells are aging.
Eat More Plant-Based Foods
The expert identified nutrition as one of the key factors for healthy aging.
Conlon states that the diet should support gut health, as this affects inflammation levels in the body.
Low inflammation is a crucial aspect of healthy aging.
The expert recommends consuming more plant-based foods: vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices, as well as drinking tea and coffee.
She also advises incorporating plant-based protein sources into your diet, particularly legumes and lentils.
Maintain Close Relationships
Another important habit is nurturing quality social connections.
Previously, many believed that a glass of wine could contribute to longevity. However, according to the expert, the benefit might not be from the alcohol itself but from the social aspect – when a person spends time with loved ones and feels part of a community.
Conlon referenced a Harvard University study that showed relationship quality is one of the most significant factors for a long and healthy life.
Use the Sauna
Sauna use can also benefit the body.
The expert explained that exposure to high temperatures activates so-called heat shock proteins in cells. In response, the body initiates repair processes and can reduce inflammation levels.
According to Conlon, cold exposure, such as ice baths, can have a similar effect as they activate different protective mechanisms in the body.
However, she noted that there is currently less evidence supporting the benefits of cold exposure.
Reduce Stress Levels
The expert also emphasizes the importance of stress management.
Chronic stress can negatively impact the body and accelerate aging processes. Therefore, regular rest, quality sleep, spending time with loved ones, and relaxation can be as important for health as diet or physical activity.
According to the specialist, it is the combination of simple daily habits that can help maintain health, lower biological age, and extend the active period of life.
