Albanians Protest Kushner’s Luxury Resort Development
For several weeks, Albanians have been protesting the planned construction of a lavish resort, backed by a company associated with Jared Kushner, son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump, near Vlorë, an area known for its flamingos and sea turtle nesting grounds.
On Saturday, residents of the village of Rrøyë, situated amidst sandy beaches and pine forests in northwestern Albania, staged a demonstration against another construction project, claiming it is being built on their confiscated land.
Waving Albanian national flags and chanting “Revolution,” they pulled down the fence. Clashes erupted between them and the police, but law enforcement did not intervene to stop them from dismantling the barrier.
“The protests will not cease until the residents of Rrøyë receive compensation. There are 200 families whose lands have been confiscated,” stated 56-year-old Zekë Nikol Shullani, one of the landowners who has been protesting for months.
