The spokesperson for the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lana Zohiou, has officially confirmed that her country has issued a formal diplomatic protest to Ukraine due to a naval drone carrying explosives found on the coast of the island of Lefkada.
Key points:
- Athens stated that it will not allow the Mediterranean Sea to become a theater of military operations.
- They demand that Ukraine withdraw all combat drones from the Mediterranean.
Greece Seeks Apology from Ukrainian Authorities
As reported by the publication Kathimerini, Greek authorities have no doubt that this is a Ukrainian drone that “acted on its behalf”.
This is also confirmed by the results of checks by Greek law enforcement officers.
Official Athens has data indicating that the naval drone was “part of a broader operation in which other similar systems were to participate to attack ships serving Russian interests.”
Currently, Greek authorities are doing everything possible for Ukraine to, allegedly, admit its mistake and apologize.
Furthermore, Athens wants to secure the withdrawal of all remaining combat drones from the Mediterranean.
According to Greek media, it is a “Kozak Mamai” model – it was allegedly found by fishermen near the island of Lefkada.
According to preliminary data, it experienced a malfunction in remote control – the drone was carrying 100 kg of explosives.
Greek officials have already suggested that the Ukrainian drone was intended to strike a ship from Russia’s “shadow fleet” operating in the Mediterranean Sea.
