Ukraine is working on the development of new mines that will use artificial intelligence to “decide” who to detonate. This was announced in Odesa during the Black Sea Security Forum by the acting Minister of Digital Transformation, Oleksandr Borniakov.

Key Takeaways:

  • Ukraine is actively engaged in creating new AI-powered mines that will automatically identify potential threats and make decisions regarding the activation of explosive devices.
  • New-generation intelligent mines will be capable of identifying different categories of individuals, determining whether an explosive device should be triggered based on the person’s characteristics.

Mines with Artificial Intelligence: A New Development from Ukraine

According to him, the Ministry of Digital Transformation is working on developing next-generation mines by integrating artificial intelligence, which is planned to automatically determine who is approaching the mine and whether the explosive device should be activated.

As the official noted, AI will be responsible for the process, identifying targets. The identification will go beyond a simple “friend or foe” assessment; it will determine who exactly is approaching the device – a child, an adult, a civilian, a soldier, or an armed individual, and so on.

For instance, if the artificial intelligence detects someone walking through a minefield and that person is shorter than 1 meter, the mine will not detonate because the AI understands it’s a child. Alternatively, if a flak jacket displays “UN,” the mine will also not activate. Or, if a person is not carrying any metal objects, it also won’t trigger, according to the AI’s assessment… I believe this could operate autonomously.
