Following the calendar reform of 2023, the celebration date has shifted by 13 days and is now as close as possible to the summer solstice period – the shortest night of the year, when nature, according to folk beliefs, is at the peak of its strength.
Until recently, Ukrainians traditionally celebrated Kupala Night before July 7. However, the celebration is now returning to its astronomical rhythm – the time when the sun is considered strongest, and fire, water, and herbs acquire special symbolic and “purifying” energy.
The Origin of Ivan Kupala: From Ancient Beliefs to Christian Tradition
Ivan Kupala is one of the oldest holidays, whose roots date back to pre-Christian times. Its origins are linked to the rituals of ancient Slavs dedicated to the summer solstice and the cycles of nature.
It was during this period, according to the beliefs of our ancestors, that the earth reached its maximum fertility, water possessed healing power, and fire was capable of cleansing people of all evil. Hence the main elements of Kupala rituals – bonfires, water, and herbs.
After the spread of Christianity, pagan traditions did not disappear but were reinterpreted and combined with the Nativity of John the Baptist. Thus, the double name – Ivan Kupala – emerged, blending folk rituals and church tradition.
The Date of Ivan Kupala in 2026: Why June 24
The calendar change by the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in 2023 was the key reason for the shift in religious holiday dates. From now on, the Nativity of John the Baptist is celebrated at the end of June, and along with it, Kupala Night.
In 2026, Ivan Kupala falls on the night before June 24 – a period closest to the astronomical summer solstice.
In essence, this is a return to the natural cycle when the night is shortest and the day is longest, which in folk tradition symbolizes the victory of light over darkness.
