Despite Russia’s threats to shell Kyiv again, foreign diplomats remain in the capital. They consider the Kremlin’s rhetoric unacceptable. In the opinion of the ambassadors, such ultimatums merely demonstrate the desperation and deadlock that Moscow finds itself in.
This was reported in response to inquiries from “Suspilne” by the press services of the embassies of France and Poland, as well as the EU Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Mathernová.
The Position of the French Embassy — What Was Stated
The French Embassy condemned Russia’s ultimatums and assured that their representation in Kyiv would continue to operate as usual.
“We condemn these latest irresponsible statements made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. Moscow’s threats, particularly concerning decision-making centers and foreign embassies in Ukraine, are unacceptable and contrary to Russia’s international obligations. Above all, they indicate a rapid approach to the dead end into which Russia’s aggressive war has fallen,” the embassy stated.
The French side also called on the Russian Federation to abandon its aggressive stance and agree to a ceasefire.
What the Polish Embassy Stated — Details
In turn, the Polish Embassy emphasized that they would not yield to the Kremlin’s provocations. Polish diplomats noted that Russia continues to employ terror against Ukraine.
“Russia continues to use terror against Ukraine, its civilian population, and foreign diplomatic missions in Kyiv, seeking to achieve political goals that it cannot achieve militarily,” the embassy reported.
Reaction from the EU Embassy in Ukraine — What Katarina Mathernová Stated
A similar position was expressed by the EU Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Mathernová. She called the threats directed at international organizations and diplomats a sign of the Kremlin’s weakness, which for years has been “hypocritically” appealing to international agreements while shelling civilian infrastructure.
“Threats to diplomats and international organizations are not a sign of strength. They are a sign of desperation. The more aggressive and threatening the Kremlin becomes, the clearer it becomes that Putin’s regime understands that it cannot break either Ukraine’s resilience or the support of its partners,” she emphasized.
Reaction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to the Threats of the Russian Federation
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andriy Sybiha, stated that Kyiv is in constant dialogue with partner countries regarding the necessity of ignoring Russian blackmail. The head of the MFA noted that Moscow is deliberately resorting to escalation and mocking peace efforts, attempting to intimidate the West.
“We know when he (Putin) escalates this rhetoric. That is, he escalates, trying to influence this so-called Western mentality. Then nuclear threats, joint exercises on the territory of Belarus. This is his, you know, again, mocking all peace efforts. They show no signs of a peace process; on the contrary, they escalate. Therefore, the world’s reaction must be proportional,” said Sybiha.
The head of the Ukrainian diplomatic department urged foreign states to respond to the threats of the Russian Federation proportionally — by strengthening support for the Ukrainian army, providing additional missiles, and ensuring the so-called deterrence package.
“He (Putin — ed.) must finally realize that he will never achieve military goals on the territory of Ukraine. He will not achieve them,” emphasized Andriy Sybiha.
Russia Threatened to Strike Kyiv — What is Known
We remind you that Moscow decided to resort to telephone blackmail once again: the head of the Russian MFA, Lavrov, called US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
According to Kremlin mouthpieces, during the conversation, the Kremlin representative attempted to intimidate the American side with announcements of new shelling of Kyiv. The invaders cynically preemptively attributed all future strikes on the city to the destruction of military targets. Lavrov remained silent about other details of the conversation, limiting himself to another portion of threats.
It is worth adding that on the night of May 24, Kyiv experienced the **most massive attack** since 2022. The Russian Federation attacked the capital with missiles and drones, and all districts of the city came under enemy fire.
