Scientists discovered an unknown creature at the bottom of the ocean
During a large-scale expedition in the Ryukyu Trench, at a record depth of 9137 meters on the ocean floor, scientists discovered a mysterious translucent organism that currently cannot be assigned to any known animal category. This singular being, reminiscent of a peculiar marine gastropod, was captured on video by researchers from Australia and Japan who are studying the deepest depressions of the Pacific Ocean.
The remarkable find, which has perplexed leading marine biologists, is reported by the British publication The Mirror.
The joint expedition of Australian and Japanese scientists spanned two months, during which specialists surveyed three of the deepest underwater canyons. The mysterious white organism was observed slowly gliding along the bottom of the Philippine Sea, where the pressure is nearly a thousand times greater than at sea level. Scientists have provisionally classified the discovery as “Animalia incerta sedis” – an animal of uncertain taxonomic position.
In addition to the unidentified creature, the team identified over 100 diverse groups of organisms, including carnivorous sponges and deep-sea fish. The lead scientific officer of the expedition, Professor Jamieson, noted that the Japanese trenches have proven surprisingly rich in life, despite the extreme conditions.
“The objective of this research was not merely to observe deep-sea organisms but to establish a foundation for future studies at such depths,” the professor emphasized.
According to specialists, the ultra-abyssal zone of the ocean remains one of Earth’s least explored frontiers. However, the researchers regrettably observed that even at these inaccessible depths, they found traces of human-generated waste.
