The first case of infection with the new Omicron subvariant named “Cicada” has been confirmed in Ukraine.
As reported by vesti-ua.net, this is evidenced by a statement from the Ministry of Health.
Specialists discovered the infection case during sequencing. This is a laboratory study that allows for genetic decoding of the virus and identification of mutations in its genome.
The detection of “Cicada” confirms the capability of the national public health system to promptly identify new variants of the virus.
The symptoms of “Cicada” infection are no different from other types of COVID-19. Key symptoms include fever, runny nose, cough, headache, and fatigue. In some instances, patients may report a loss of taste and smell, rashes, or eye irritation.
Medical professionals emphasize that vaccination remains the most effective method of protection against severe illness and its complications.
Globally, this subvariant was first reported at the end of 2024. Currently, its spread is known in 23 countries.
According to WHO estimates, “Cicada” does not show signs of increased epidemiological risk. Experts believe this strain is unlikely to cause a new widespread wave of illness.
