North Korea has likely significantly enhanced its nuclear weapons production capabilities recently.
Key Takeaways:
- The DPRK has improved its nuclear weapon production capacity, as confirmed by the head of the IAEA.
- According to experts, North Korea possesses considerable potential in nuclear material production.
DPRK is Boosting Nuclear Weapons Production Capacity
This was stated by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
Speaking in Seoul, Grossi confirmed a rapid increase in activity at the five-megawatt reactor, reprocessing plant, light-water reactor, and other facilities of the North Korean nuclear complex in Yongbyon.
All of this indicates a very serious growth in the DPRK’s nuclear weapons production potential.
Grossi added that North Korea’s nuclear capabilities are estimated to be several dozen warheads.
According to him, the IAEA has recorded the construction of a new facility, similar to uranium enrichment workshops in Yongbyon, and analysis of external signs suggests a significant expansion of enrichment capabilities.

Satellite images taken in April corroborate the IAEA’s assessment, states the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
The images indicate the completion of a probable uranium enrichment plant capable of producing weapons-grade material.
